What ages do you teach?

  • SVFSC teaches all ages. If your child can comfortably walk on their own, have full body control, coordination, and flexibility, they can register for their fist class or lesson. There is also no upper age limit to join SVFSC and start skating! 

 What does my skater need for the first class?

  • Younger skaters should dress warm with insulating layers, but lightweight close-fitting clothing is best. Snow pants for young beginners are fine but you will find that as your skater gets older and advances in their skills that they will not need to be as bundled up. Gloves or mittens and hats should be worn. Helmets are encouraged especially for young skaters.

  • Skaters should come dressed for skating but can put their skates on in the Sterns Arena Lobby. 

Where can I find the dates and times of lessons if I have misplaced my schedule?

  • Ice and class times are also listed on the SVFSC website  homepage towards the bottom.

What is private ice?

  • Private ice, sometimes refered to as blocks of ice, are blocks of time that SVFSC has reserved the ice to be used for private lessons or individual practice. You do not need to have a private lesson scheduled to skate on private ice. All SVFSC members may purchase any private ice.


What are private lessons?

  • Private lessons are a great way to get one on one instruction for either a recreational or competitive skater. 
  • Private Lessons can be taken in conjunction with the Learn to Skate Classes to help master the skills from each class or can be taken independently if you are wanting to advance your skills.
  • There is no level requirement for private lessons! You or your child can begin at any time. 

What are the benefits of hiring a private lessons coach?

  • Your skater will progress at a faster rate.
  • Your private lessons coach will prepare your skater for competitions.

How do I find a private lesson coach?

  • There is a list of coaches on the SVFSC website under the About tab, here you will find information about each coach. If a coach gives private lessons it will be listed under the coaches information and if they provide lessons for Advanced, Basic Skills, or both. CLICK HERE to view coaches information.

How often should my child skate per week?

  • This depends on the age of your child, the level of the skater, and the goals of your skater. Does your child want to be a recreational skater or a competitive skater? This will affect how much time your skater will spend on the ice and can be discussed with your private lessons coach or a group lessons coach if you are looking into doing private lessons. 

How often should my child have a private lesson? 

  • This should be discussed with your private lessons coach and depends on the goals of your skater. If you are wondering if private lessons are for you please contact one of our private lesson coaches.

How long does a private lesson last?

  • A beginner usually has a 15-minute lesson. Lesson times typically increase with a skater's skill level and age. 

Is hiring a private lessons coach required to participate in a competition? 

  • Yes

When can I or my child begin competing?

  • SVFSC coaches attend competitions for all skill levels. Your private lessons coach can help you decide when your child is ready. SVFSC’s annual LEAP & COMPETE competition is a great 1st competition for your skater. 

When are private lessons given?

  • Private lessons are given during the times SVFSC offers private ice blocks. These blocks can be purchased on our registration page under Private Ice.

How much does a coach charge for private lessons?

  • Coaches at SVFSC charge between $6 - $12 per 15 min one on one session. The price depends on the level and experience of each coach. When private lessons are being given coaches are acting on their own behalf independent of SVFSC.

  • Private lesson payments are made to your private lesson coach. Private lesson fees are for coaching and do not cover the cost of the use of ice. Ice time must be purchased for private lessons. Purchase the block of ice that your private lesson falls on. You may also purchase blocks for individual practice. ICE BLOCKS can be purchased on SVFSC's REGISTRATION PAGE

How can a parent get involved in the club?

  • SVFSC requires families to fulfill volunteer hours each session. Families can fulfill more hours than required to receive credits to their accounts. Volunteering is a great way to get involved in the club. 
  • Board meetings are open to the public and another great way to be involved. Members can serve on the SVFSC board of directors or on committees.
